The Brief Hodgson Roofing was approached by a homeowner in Harrow to address an aging, deteriorating roof on a traditional terraced property. The client required a complete overhaul of the main roof, the front bay window roof, and the rear lower lean-to structure. While the aesthetic priority was to maintain the character of the property using premium natural slate, the project also presented an ideal opportunity to upgrade the home’s thermal efficiency and modernize the roofline with low-maintenance materials. The Challenge & Safety Strategy Working on terraced properties in North London presents specific logistical and safety challenges, particularly regarding access and proximity to neighbouring properties. At Hodgson Roofing, safety is non-negotiable. Before any work commenced, our team implemented a strict health and safety strategy: Fixed Scaffolding: A full, fixed independent scaffold was erected around the entire property to grant our team secure, stable access to all working levels. Trained Operatives: In line with strict UK safety legislation, all operatives on-site were fully qualified and trained in working at heights, ensuring the project was executed safely and efficiently. The Project Execution Phase 1: Stripping & Structural Inspection The project began with the systematic strip-back of the existing, failing roof. The original slate tiles, ridge tiles, cement fillets, metal flashings, and timber battens were carefully brought down to ground level and cleared from the site using our integrated waste removal service. Once stripped to the bare rafters, our expert roofers conducted a thorough inspection of the timber framing to check for stability and look for signs of rot or water penetration.
